80 people per toilet? Caritas to secure better conditions for displaced Ukrainians in Transcarpathia

The war in Ukraine forced more than 12 million people out of their homes. A large number of them found refuge in the western parts of the country. One of the regions where people fleeing the war have headed is the Transcarpathian region. It currently hosts up to 400,000 internally displaced Ukrainians. Many of them are living in completely unsatisfactory conditions. Caritas Czech Republic is launching a project to improve sanitary facilities in accommodation centres and to ensure the construction of modular units. These will provide accommodation for the most vulnerable groups of displaced people.

More than 300,000 Ukrainian refugees have already found asylum in the Czech Republic. 40 per cent of them are children. But many of them do not go to educational institutions because there is not enough place for them. Caritas Czech Republic has therefore set up the Young Caritas club for Ukrainian children, which currently consists of 14 children.

Humanitarian aid for 1500 displaced Ukrainians. Caritas Czech Republic has launched new project

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has already displaced more than 11 million people from their homes. Most of them left to the country's western regions, including Drohobych and its surroundings, which is hosting more than 40,000 displaced Ukrainians. The local Caritas branch provides them with assistance, but many people remain outside the official support. Caritas Czech Republic will improve the access to health care and provide immediate basic needs to 1500 displaced Ukrainians within the Drohobych region.

The Merciful Summer completely rescued fifteen thousand people from the debt trap

The amendment to Act on Enforcement, the so-called "Merciful Summer", which was aimed at forgiving interest to debtors of public institutions after payment of the principal sum, ended at the end of January this year. The Chamber of Executors presented the final data, according to which 15,000 people had their debts wiped out. The total paid principal sums amount to 390 million crowns.

Caritas Czech Republic launches DG ECHO-funded project to help refugees in Moldova

Moldova, the poorest country in Europe, has received the largest number of refugees per capita since the start of the war in Ukraine. Although the country welcomed refugees with open arms, it soon reached the limits of its capacity. Caritas Czech Republic launched a project in Moldova to help vulnerable refugees. In total, we will support over 200,000 refugees, relieving the overburdened Moldovan state.

Manana Metreveli lives in the village of Utsera in the Georgian region of Racha. For many years, she has been making compost to reduce household waste. Thanks to Caritas  Czech Republic in Georgia, Manana improved her composting practices and received a wooden compost box, which is also used by her neighbours. Manana's village has become a role model for developing good composting practices.
