The humanitarian crisis in the Middle East continues, half a million people remain displaced

Several months after the beginning of the conflict in the Middle East, the situation in the region remains insecure. Ceasefires are not respected, which continues to complicate lives of civilians. In conflict-affected areas, humanitarian conditions are critical, exacerbated by damaged infrastructure, disrupted services, and population displacement. In Lebanon alone, more than one million people were on the run during spring. Over half a million of them have not returned home yet.

Aftermath of the earthquake in Venezuela: Caritas is helping on the ground

Two weeks ago, Venezuela was hit with two earthquakes, resulting in the death of more than 3,800 people. Venezuelans continue searching for their relatives in the rubble of collapsed buildings, while the number of reported missing remains in the tens of thousands. According to the UN, the damage could reach as much as 37 billion USD. It is estimated that nearly 18,000 people lost their homes. Many of them camp in parks because accommodation capacity is lacking. Caritas Venezuela operates on the ground and is supported by Caritas Czech Republic through the international Caritas network.

There is no life without water: How Caritas helps secure access to it

This summer, the Czech Republic has already experienced several temperature records. We cope with the hottest days by staying indoors or finding shade wherever we can. Gardeners irrigate their crops with well water, while farmers cool their livestock with measures such as fans. During these periods, many of us impatiently wait for rain and make sure to stay hydrated. But can you imagine coping with extreme heat without access to water? Today, more than 2 billion people worldwide lack access to a safe source of drinking water. In some places, prolonged droughts and the impacts of climate change are the main causes. Elsewhere, armed conflicts further worsen the situation by destroying infrastructure and disrupting water supplies. We bring you an overview of the countries where Caritas Czech Republic is helping – from providing access to safe drinking water to supporting agriculture during droughts.

The strongest earthquake in 100 years struck Venezuela at a time when the country had been facing a prolonged humanitarian crisis. Even before the disaster, nearly 8 million people had been in need of assistance. Shortly after the catastrophe, the government has opened the country to international aid. Caritas Venezuela has the option to accept financial donations from abroad and expand its capacity to meet the needs of the most vulnerable. In response to the event, organisations within the Caritas Internationalis network, including Caritas Czech Republic, have also become involved.

However, displacement takes many forms – 36.4 million have sought safety across borders, while 8.4 million are already abroad applying for asylum. In this article, on the occasion of World Refugee Day, which is commemorated annually on June 20, we take a look at displacement from several perspectives, showing the diverse stories behind the term and how Caritas Czech Republic’s international aid responds to them.

Czech agricultural technologies are heading to Zambia

Why connect Czech agricultural innovations with the needs of farmers in Zambia? Martin Jurkovič, the secretary general of the Czech Agricultural and Forestry Machinery Association (AZET), addressed this question in an interview with Caritas Czech Republic. In cooperation with Czech Development Agency, we aim to bring Czech technologies and know-how to Zambia in order to support more efficient and climate-resilient agriculture. Domestic companies will provide their innovations, while their collaboration and the transfer of solutions into practice are coordinated by AZET.

Conflicts out of the spotlight: 6 crises we tend to forget about in 2026

Armed conflicts, ceasefires during which civilians continue to die, and drone attacks in previously safe areas. At the moment, there are more active conflicts than at any time since the end of World War II. Half of those conflicts are taking place in Africa. Their consequences do not affect only the participating states, their residents or neighbouring countries; they impact the whole world, our economy, environment and peace of mind. But what crises and conflicts stay out of the media spotlight? We bring you six examples in this article.

Climate change affects everyone: In Zambia, we are preparing young farmers as well as experienced growers

Samuel is in his early twenties and has been farming for only a short time. By contrast, Clerkson has worked in the industry since the 1990s. However, both of their livelihoods are threatened by climate change. Droughts are destroying harvests, yet agriculture is a common source of income in Zambia. That is why Caritas Czech Republic is training local farmers in modern techniques to help them better manage the impacts of climate change
