Just like 2020, the year 2021 was a year like no other. We had our highs and lows. It was more like a roller-coaster especially with the outbreaks of new Covid-19 variants. Despite the challenges that affected many, including Caritas Czech Republic in Zambia, there were definitely moments that we cannot forget. We are monitoring the unemployment rate and rejoicing at its consistently low value (it fell further to 2.6 percent in October!). We are interested in how to support economic growth so that the gross domestic product grows. But does this growth always bring development to society, does it increase the quality of human life? And are those who do not benefit from economic expansion and remain unemployed just people who do not want to work?

The Charitas Czech Republic helps the poor across the whole country. We run several social services and some of them can be used by people without a home. „Many of our clients are motivated to take care of themselves. It is not a group of people we see on the streets in unkempt condition“, says Stanislav Fiala, director of the St. Theresa Shelter Home, disproving the myth of homelessness. He reveals how the social services managed to fight the coronavirus in the interview.

Contribute to the Three Kings Collection 2022

The Three Kings Collection is the largest charity fundraiser in the Czech Republic. Every year, more than 70,000 volunteers join its organization and the process of caroling and collecting tens of millions of crowns (in 2020 it was over 130 million, in total 1.5 billion crowns for the entire existence of the collection).

On Saturday, November 20, a Food Collection took place throughout the Czech Republic, where a total of incredible 410 tons of food and drugstore products were raised. A number of local charities from our Caritas network took part in the autumn round of Food Collection.

Caritas Czech Republic will provide modern medical equipment to a paediatric hospital in Cambodia

Caritas Czech Republic has been helping to improve maternal and newborn healthcare in Cambodia for a long time. This time we will equip the National Paediatric Hospital in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, with the necessary medical equipment. Providing the necessary medical devices to the hospital and the associated training of local staff will help to reduce neonatal and under-five mortality rates and reduce maternal mortality.

When a parent fails to pay child support from now on the government can help out

The number of single parents is increasing year by year in the Czech Republic, and the current economic situation is putting many of them in great financial difficulties. Especially when these people lose their regular monthly income for a while or deal with lengthy disputes with the other parent who does not pay the child support. Starting this July, the state should provide at least partial relief to single parents in the latter case through the payment of so-called substitute maintenance.

Caritas will provide help to people affected by tornado for at least another year

The Diocesan Caritas Brno has the largest revenue of the charity collection in its history. The inhabitants of the Czech Republic sent there over 345 million Czech crowns to people affected by the June tornado in South Moravia.
