How is Caritas supporting refugees and internally displaced people in Ukraine?

Inside Ukraine, the number of internally displaced people is growing dramatically, following the number of refugees that crossed the borders. There are millions of people in need and local Caritas offices are providing direct emergency aid to them. We will continue to provide humanitarian aid to the people affected by the war, both refugees and internally displaced people.

Caritas sending humanitarian aid trucks to Ukraine

On Thursday, 3 March 2022, the Caritas Czech Republic dispatched two trucks for the Mariupol Caritas which operates in Ukraine and provides basic needs for thousands of displaced people that have left their homes due to the ongoing conflict. The trucks are loaded mainly with hygiene items and food supplies, including complementary baby food. They are heading to Zaporzhye in south-eastern Ukraine. The Caritas Mariupol is a long-standing partner of the Ostrava-Opava Diocesan Caritas.

Caritas Czech Republic is ready to help refugees from Ukraine coming to the Czech Republic

We are closely following the aggravated situation in Ukraine. We have organized the collection ‘Caritas for Ukraine’, by means of which, in cooperation with our long-term partner Caritas Ukraine, we focus on providing the people of Ukraine directly affected by the war with anything they need – water, food, hygiene and shelter. Part of the intervention is provision of psychological support.

Klára Boumová works at Caritas Czech Republic as a manager for advocacy in the field of migration. In addition to direct assistance to the needy, Caritas also comments on laws in the social and health field or initiates negotiations on the need for systemic changes at national and European level. However, the normal working day was disrupted by the war in Ukraine, to which it was necessary to react quickly and to coordinate the assistance provided in appropriate way.
