Six Months After the Floods: Caritas Czech Republic Continues to Support the Most Affected

Six months after the devastating floods that hit the Czech Republic mid-September, Caritas Czech Republic continues to support the victims of this natural disaster. The initial phase of aid, which focused on swift material and financial support for people from flooded households, has now been concluded. In cooperation with other non-profit organizations, Caritas is preparing the second phase of assistance—targeted support for those in especially difficult situations. This aid will be funded by donations from public and church collections, which raised a total of 158 million CZK.

This support extends both directly to the affected areas and to refugees in the Czech Republic. In 2024, Caritas Czech Republic and local Caritas branches (Olomouc, Ostrava, and Znojmo) provided a total of 28.178 million CZK in aid to Ukrainians abroad, and 31.278 million CZK to those who found refuge in the Czech Republic.

The energy crisis and its impact on the situation of people living in poverty

The rising cost of living is the most pressing concern for 93% of Europeans, according to the latest European Parliament survey, which has a serious impact on the situation of people on low incomes, especially single parents, the elderly and young people. They are unable to cover basic needs such as heating their homes, buying food or paying their rent. Over the last year there was a 40 percent increase across Europe in the number of people seeking support from social service providers in the charity's network.

Caritas Czech Republic celebrates 100 years, archbishop Jan Graubner was behind its renewal

Caritas grew out of a natural need to help those in need. It was established in Czechoslovakia as a systematically functioning organization exactly 100 years ago, and after the fall of the communist regime, which tried to stop its activities, the church essentially rebuilt it.

Unemployment and poverty statistics create a false picture. Caritas CARES poverty report

The unemployment rate looks good, but it does not reflect reality. It does not capture the situation of people who are over-indebted, living in precarious situations or working in the grey economy. However, it was these people experiencing poverty who were the hardest hit by the effects of the pandemic; women even more so than men. The new Caritas CARES! report shows a different view of the official figures and highlights how Caritas can help those who are most at risk of poverty.

The Three Kings Collection 2022 has begun. The carolers have taken to the streets

All of us from Caritas Czech Republic, including our carolers, look forward to the traditional Three Kings Collection every year. At the beginning of January, tens of thousands of volunteers are going to take part in the largest collection event in the Czech republic nationwide for the 22nd time, following an ancient folk custom. Today, carolers, as in the past, spread God's blessings and messages of merciful love among the people, while asking for a contribution for people in need.

Donors supported the Three Kings’ Collection with almost CZK 81,5. The money is already helping. Tha

Every coin of this year’s Three Kings’ Collection was counted. The 21st year has reached CZK 81,476,000. That is a considerable amount. The traditional carolling had to leave out the main aspect: the carollers, due to the epidemiological situation. It was possible to contribute to the Collection only online or through the “static moneyboxes”. The collected money is no longer stored on the account, but is already helping all over the country those in need, who found themselves in a difficult situation due to the covid-19 epidemic as well.
